What Is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric Dentistry refers to dental care for children. It addresses the specific dental care needs of young people from infants through teenagers. A pediatric dentist monitors the shedding of the primary teeth and the eruption of the permanent teeth, providing routine preventative care and restorative procedures when necessary. Pediatric dentistry may also include orthodontic screenings to determine if and when treatment may be needed.

Benefits of Pediatric Dentistry

There are many benefits of pediatric dentistry for young patients:

  • Prevent tooth decay. The primary goal of pediatric dentistry is to prevent tooth decay and keep the teeth healthy. Both the baby teeth and the permanent teeth are important for proper chewing and speech development. Regular dental cleanings are a necessary part of maintaining dental health.
  • Prevent gum disease. Regular dental cleanings can also prevent gum disease, a bacterial infection of the gums caused by plaque buildup on the teeth. Oral examinations can detect the symptoms of gum disease so that it can be treated and prevented.
  • Kid-friendly environment. Our office environment is designed to accommodate children. We have experience working with young patients and providing dental care with a friendly, positive attitude.
  • Positive start to dental health. When dental care begins in infancy and early childhood, it lays the foundation for a lifetime of dental health. Children are less likely to be fearful or develop dental anxiety when they are used to going to the dentist from a young age.

Why Choose Cambridge Family Dentistry?

As a family dental practice, children and teens make up a large percentage of our patients. We provide pediatric dentistry in addition to adult dentistry services so that families can come to one convenient location for dental care.

We believe that families who receive dental care together are more likely to prioritize dental health. Parents are the best examples for children to teach them how to care for their teeth and the importance of regular dental visits.

Procedures Offered

We provide the following pediatric dental services:

Cleaning

Dental cleanings. We provide a thorough dental cleaning of your child’s teeth to remove plaque and calculus. The teeth are then polished until smooth and shiny.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants. Teeth that have deep grooves or crevices are at higher risk for tooth decay. Dental sealants can be applied to the teeth to fill in the small spaces where plaque is likely to gather. It is like a preventative filling to reduce the chance of developing cavities.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel. We provide fluoride treatments for children to harden the enamel of their teeth and make them more resistant to decay.

Mouth Guards

Mouthguards. Sports injuries are one of the leading causes of dental trauma in children. We create custom mouthguards that are comfortable and more effective at preventing dental injuries than those you can purchase from the store.

Oral Examinations

Oral examinations. We perform a comprehensive oral evaluation during each routine appointment to evaluate the health of your teeth and the soft tissues of your mouth. This includes an oral cancer screening to check for any abnormalities that may need to be addressed.

Cavity Free Tree Photo

Cavity Free Tree

We believe that early education and positive reinforcement creates lifelong healthy dental habits. Each month, all of our patients who have no cavities have their name placed on our Cavity-Free Tree. At the end of the month, one child’s name is drawn to win a special prize!

The Importance of Early Dental Care

Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

When should my child have their first dental visit?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have an oral evaluation by the age of one or within 6 months of their first tooth erupting. This helps to maintain dental and oral health and to normalize the experience of going to the dentist.
How often should children brush and floss their teeth?
We recommend that all patients, including children, brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Brushing once in the morning and once at night helps to remove food particles and plaque from the teeth before it can harden into calculus and cause tooth decay and gum disease.
Are fluoride treatments necessary?
Fluoride treatments are are highly recommended. As children’s teeth develop, both the primary and the permanent teeth, fluoride strengthens the enamel, making it more resistant to decay and less likely to be damaged due to injury.
Why does my child need a mouthguard?
If your child plays any sport, whether it is low or high contact, a mouthguard can protect their teeth. We provide custom mouthguards that fit snugly to the teeth, making them more comfortable and more effective at preventing dental injuries.
Is pediatric dentistry covered by insurance?
If your children are covered under any dental insurance plan, preventive dental care will most likely be covered. Medicaid also covers preventive dental care for children.
